Uber Policy Changes

If you have been following the news lately, then perhaps you know UBER has unveiled it's new policy changes. It has a catchy P.R. phrase called "Turning The Lights On." It has to do with the company trying to change the culture of silence around sexual violence, and sexual harassment. CNN reported in the past four years over 100 UBER drivers have been accused of sexual assaults and harassment. Keep in mind those are the ones that were formally reported. I have been an UBER driver for about a year in Atlanta obviously a major U.S. city, and I will soon be a veteran of 2,000 rides. The rider/passenger dynamic is always a complicated one, when you add gender it really gets dicey, and it has. I won't use this space to detail the UBER Policy Changes, take a few minutes to review them yourself but they are much needed. It's a start in the right direction.

I am hoping the company improves it's background check for drivers. I have seen drivers who I would not ride with, and certainly would not let my daughter get in a car with them. Not all drivers have the character, or morals to make the right decision when a scantily clan, very drunk female calls for a ride and jumps in your car at 3:00 in the morning, and simply says "take me home directions are in the App." Then when you get there, you have to wake her up, and put her out. If you drive long enough in a city like Atlanta it's going to happen.

If and when UBER improves it's background checks for drivers a lot of the tension sexual and otherwise will be reduced. No doubt there are many predators out there and UBER and Lyft should go to great lengths to make sure they don't become rider share drivers. I am so glad the ride share industry is finally "Turning The Lights On" this dirty not so little secret has gone on for a long time. With all the said, most ride share drivers are just trying to get the traveling public from where they are to where they want to go. Take a few minutes to read an earlier entry I submitted about ride share safety tips. Please use common sense.
